What is IPL Photo Facial?

An intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial or photo rejuvenation is a process by which light energy penetrates deep into the skin to encourage collagen and blood vessels to constrict, diminishing fine lines and redness. The procedure is used to treat a wide range of concerns including birthmarks, freckles, sun spots, acne, and rosacea. With the use of appropriate wavelengths, the heat damages the indicated target and either brings it to the surface to scab and heal or be eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system.

Who is IPL Photo Facial for?

The IPL photofacial is a safe and effective choice for most healthy adults. It is ideal for younger patients who are starting to see early pigmentation. Patients with fair skin that has not been tanned often see the best results. Darker skin tones do not respond as well to IPL photofacials. Adam and Eve Medical Aesthetics in Scottsdale may advise other treatment options if this describes you. To best determine if this is the right choice for you, please share your medical history, concerns and goals with Adam and Eve Medical Aesthetics in Scottsdale during your initial consultation.

What Should I Expect after IPL Photo Facial?

Immediately after your photorejuvenation treatment, you may appear as if you have a slight sunburn or have been participating in strenuous cardiovascular exercise. This is normal, and any redness will subside usually in two to five days. Crusting can take place which may last up to 10 days, and some spots may appear darker for a few days before they get lighter. In many cases, more than one treatment is necessary to achieve your goals. The number of treatments necessary is best determined after the first treatment. Results can vary and are often enhanced when patients commit to follow-up treatments every six to 12 months.

What Does a IPL Photo Facial Treatment Consist of?

IPL photofacials are typically safe and effective. To help minimize any potential side effects, Adam and Eve Medical Aesthetics in Scottsdale recommends patients avoid sun exposure, with proper sunscreen for at least four weeks prior to treatment. The area treated should be free from sunburn, suntan, cold sores and inflamed acne on the day of your appointment. Stop using aspirin, Aleve or ibuprofen for at least one week prior to treatment. If you wear contacts, bring your case to the appointment as you will remove them prior to having your photofacial.

On the day of your Photofacial session, plan to spend about 45 minutes to an hour in the treatment room. Your skin will be cleaned to prep it, and we will ask you to remove your contact lenses if you wear them. The procedure is relatively quick, and most patients describe it as only minimally uncomfortable, at most. The sensation includes mild zaps as the device is moved across your face.

Some scabs may be visible on your skin throughout the healing process. Post care instructions will be reviewed after your treatment. Adam and Eve Medical Aesthetics will follow up with you within two weeks post treatment. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call our office.
