The Difference Between Botox and Jeuveau Injections

Those looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles have almost certainly heard of Botox and Jeuveau injections. Both belong to a class of medications called neuromodulators and work similarly—by relaxing the muscles that cause unsightly wrinkles. It may be a bit confusing when it comes time to choose between the two since both are recommended for those with mild to severe facial wrinkles. While they are similar, they are not interchangeable, so how does someone know which is right for them? We will discuss the difference between Botox and Jeuveau and how to make the best choice for your needs.

Overview of Botox

Botox has been used by professionals for years as an effective way to diminish fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, these injections block chemicals from nerves that cause the muscles to relax. Botox has been FDA-approved since 2002 and has proven to be popular among millions of people. The treatment lasts approximately 3-12 months, and its effectiveness depends on several factors, including:

  • The frequency of the treatment
  • Amount of Botox injected into a specific area
  • Metabolic rate
  • The body’s response to the treatment

In addition to cosmetic uses, Botox has also been known to treat conditions such as neck spasms, lazy eyes, migraine headaches, overactive bladder, and excessive sweating. The procedure is done quickly, with an appointment typically lasting between 10-20 minutes, and results start showing in about 1-4 days.

Overview of Jeuveau

FDA-approved since 2019, Jeuveau is still fairly new. Known as “Newtox,” the treatment is used for the treatment of glabellar lines, crow’s feet, or other cosmetic concerns and promises to give the skin a younger, more refreshed appearance. The treatment is quick and affordable and requires ongoing treatments to maintain results.

Efficacy Comparison

With both treatments being so much alike, how do patients know which to choose? One of the biggest differences is that the treatments are made in different countries by different manufacturers. When it comes to Jeuveau vs. Botox, Jeuveau is slightly more affordable than Botox. Additionally, the treatments use a slightly different form of botulinum toxin, with Botox containing onabotulinumtoxinA and Jeuveau containing prabotulinumtoxinA. Both are considered to be extremely safe when administered by a qualified professional, and allergic reactions are rare. Botox and Jeuveau treatments last for the same amount of time, and the results are usually described as being subtle and natural, giving users a more refined look.

So, what can patients expect during and after both procedures? During the treatments, patients feel a tiny prick and often report only slight discomfort. There is usually just mild redness, swelling, or bruising. However, this fades quickly and should not be a cause for concern. Patients are happy to know that there is no downtime for recovery, and they can immediately go back to their regular activities.
